英兵から日本兵へ

UK Soldier to Japanese Soldiers

次の手紙は現在諸君の敵として戦っている英国の兵隊が真情を吐露して書きつづったもので、ペグー山脈高地に残存している日本兵諸君に宛てた手紙です。

The following letter was written by a British soldier who is now fighting as your enemy, expressing his true feelings and addressed to the Japanese soldiers still remaining in the highlands of the Pegu range.

日本兵諸君……僕等はこの手紙をお互に兵隊同志だという率直な気持から書きました。

Dear Japanese Soldiers...... we write this letter out of a frank feeling that we are each other's comrades in arms.

ですから何の飾り気もなく僕達の心持をありのままに諸君に語り度いと思います。

Therefore, we would like to tell you our feelings without any embellishment.

お互に辛い戦場生活をしている者として君達の苦境は察するに余りがある程、よく分ります。

As comrades who have been through hardships on the battlefield with each other, I understand your plight too well to imagine what you are going through.

どんなに君達が食糧、兵器、医薬に不自由し悩んでいるか、よく知っていりす。

I know how much you are suffering from lack of food, weapons, and medicine.

既に山をも押し流す樣な雨が激しく降りはじめました。

It was already beginning to rain heavily, as if it were washing away the mountains.

君達は逃げ出す望みも全く無くまるで罠にでも掛かった様にこの豪雨が猛威をたくましくしている山中にじっと潜んでいて何になるでしょうか。

What are you doing huddled in the mountains where this torrential downpour is raging like a trap with no hope of escape?

唯、飢餓と悪疫によってもがきつつ死んで行くのみでしょう。

However, you will only struggle and die from starvation and disease.

今こそ胸に手を当ててこういう事態をはっきりと悟るべき時が来たのです。

Now is the time to think over matters carefully and clearly under your situation.

既に諸君も知っている様にビルマ作戦は終了してしまったのです。

As you already know, the Burma campaign is over.

諸君は実に勇敢に男らしく戦って来ました。

You have fought bravely and valiantly.

僕達も君達があらゆる困苦欠乏に耐えて戦って来た事を全く感心し尊敬さへしていります。

We are in utter awe and respect of what you have endured and fought for despite all the hardships and shortages you have endured.

野營の夜毎の話題は君達日本兵の勇敢さについてです。

The nightly topic of conversation in the camp is about the bravery of all you Japanese soldiers.

しかし戦争に勝つには兵隊だけが勇敢であっても駄目です。

But to win a war, it is not enough for the soldiers to be brave.

君達は誠に勇敢でした。

You were indeed truly brave.

しかし君達の上級指揮官は無能でありその上、日本軍には優秀な近代兵器が無いのです。

But your senior commanders are incompetent, and on top of that, the Japanese army lacks excellent modern weapons.

これでどうして勝利を獲得する事で出来るでしょうか。

How can this be a winning formula?

到底勝目の無い事は分り切った事です。

It is obvious that there is no way to prevail.

諸君……よく考へて下さい。

Gentlemen, please think carefully

死ぬのは簡単な事で諸君自身はあらゆる苦しみから免れる事が出来るでしょう。

Dying is easy, and you yourself can avoid all the suffering.

しかし諸君が死んだからと言って君達の祖国日本の為には少しもならないのです。

But your deaths will not benefit your homeland, Japan, at all.

僕達は兵隊であると同時に血も涙もある人間です。

We are soldiers but also at the same time, human beings with feelings and empathy.

人間として君達が山中で無駄死をするのを黙って見てはいられないのです。

As human beings, we cannot stand by and watch you die for nothing in the mountains.

それ故、是非諸君がもう一度立ち上って日本の軍閥が倒れた後、新日本建設に邁進する樣望んでいります。

Therefore, I hope that you will rise up once again and strive to build a new Japan after the fall of the Gunbatsu

どうか決して犬死をしないでこの好機を掴んで下さい。

Please you must never die in vain and seize this golden opportunity.

一時も早く直接でもよいし或いは緬甸人の仲介者を通じてでもよい故、附近の英軍將校と和を結び給へ。

As soon as possible, either directly or through a Burmese intermediary, please make peace with the British officers in the area.

諸君は抵抗を止めた印に両手を挙げ何でもよいから白いものを降りながら「アイ・サレンダー」と言って近づいて来給え。

You are to approach us with a white object, anything works, raising both your hands in a sign that you have stopped resisting, and say, “I Surrender.

そうすれば諸君は決して敵としては取扱はれず「昨日の敵は今日の友」と軍歌にある様に、最後迄兵士としての本分を果した勇士として尊敬を以て迎へられます。

If you do this, you will not be treated as enemies, but as in the words of the military song, “Yesterday's enemy is today's friend,” you will be welcomed with respect as heroes who have fulfilled their duty as soldiers to the end.

その後は諸君の多数の戦友が平和に暮している収容所へ送られるのです。

You will then be sent to a camp where many of your comrades-in-arms are living in peace.

収容所の待遇は世界各國が協議決定した捕虜取扱規則に忠實に準拠したものです。

The treatment in the camps strictly conforms to the rules for the handling of prisoners of war as discussed and decided upon by the nations of the world.

ここで諸君は再生の日を希望をもって待つことが出来るのです。

Here you can wait with hope for the day of rebirth.

諸君……もはや事ここに至った以上諸君は何をする事も出来ないのです。

Gentlemen,...... there is nothing you can do now that things have come to this point.

諸君の現在の為すべきことは先ず生きる事です。

The first thing you must do now is to live.

どうか我々の意を汲んでこの機会を逃さないで下さい。

Please understand our wish and do not let this opportunity pass you by.
